Now being King of Germany and Spain frightened the French and English who basically declared that if he kept both thrones they were going to gang up and murder his ass.
So to placate them the family chose Spain as their throne, in part because in the Holy Roman Empire they had to be voted onto the throne by the prince-electors.
So this branch of the family settled into Spain, but they were always afraid they would lose the throne and they also wanted to keep their inheritance in the family hence the royal inbreeding.
